Leo DrawsSome individuals with autism spectrum disorders are spectacular artists. The drawing ability of a three-year-old autistic savant named Nadia has been compared to the classical master Leonardo da Vinci.

She drew detailed pictures of horses (below left) and roosters, however, she could not recognize her parents or describe her drawings. Interestingly, she lost her ability to draw when she learned how to speak.

Leo's drawing abilities did not emerge until he was six years old. His artwork in nursery school, if he did it at all, was crude. Leo could not draw right angles or cross two lines to make an "X." His therapists said the skill of drawing straight and curved lines was a precursor to handwriting, and I feared that he would never be able to write or draw. But now Leo brings home intricately drawn self-portraits, and his classmates copy his artwork because they think his ideas are so good. A slideshow of his artwork from nursery and kindergarten is below.
